How to Clean White Wood Furniture - Our Guide to Taking Care of your White Wood Bed Frame

By Jonny Haskins 23 March 2023

Now that you’ve invested in beautiful new white wooden furniture, it’s important to keep it looking that way. Due to it being white, your new furniture might be more prone to showing marks. However, it will look much better when kept properly clean.

This is our complete guide on how to keep white wood furniture clean.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning is important for a white wooden bed frame as it takes less time for dirt to become obvious on such a bright surface. More importantly, regularly cleaning your furniture gets rid of bacteria and viruses, thereby keeping your home clean and yourself healthy.

Thankfully, cleaning your white wooden furniture doesn’t have to be difficult with the following easy steps.

Dusting

The first step when cleaning your wooden furniture is to properly dust it, removing any loose surface dust. Use a lint-free, soft cloth to do this, as it won’t scratch your furniture or get stuck, like a feather duster sometimes can do.

Doing this once a week will help keep your white wood furniture in good condition, meaning that when it comes to doing a more thorough clean, it’ll be that much easier.

Soap and Water

When your white wood furniture needs more TLC than a basic dust over, a little bit of soap and warm water can do wonders. Fill a bucket with warm water and dish soap, but only halfway, so that it doesn’t spill. Dip in a microfiber cloth or sponge and wring it out so that it’s just damp and doesn’t drip. Then, carry this through to your furniture and wipe it down.

If your furniture has a treated finish, you can give it a bit of a scrub to get the worst of the dirt out. If it doesn’t, however, you’ll need to be a lot gentler so as to not cause damage.

Remove Soap Residue

The next thing you need to do is remove the soapy residue left on the furniture from the previous step. This will remove any sticky residue and prevent streaks on your furniture when it dries.

To do this, just dampen a new cloth under fresh clean water (NOT your soapy bucket!) and buff away at the furniture with circular motions. You might have to do this more than once to get rid of all the soap. Make sure the cloth isn’t too wet, as this can damage the wood.

Dry Your Furniture

While getting your white wood furniture wet is essential for cleaning it properly, wood, unfortunately, doesn’t like to be wet. Lots of moisture can seriously damage this material, so make sure it’s completely dry before moving on.

The best way to do this is with a clean, lint-free, soft towel. Ideally, you won’t have gotten your furniture sopping wet during the cleaning process, so spending a few minutes wiping it down with a towel should be enough to dry it off.

Maintenance

Cleaning your white wood furniture is one thing, but you need to also make sure you’re giving it the love and care it needs to stay in the best condition it possibly can.

Check Regularly for Wear and Tear

Every few weeks, you should inspect your wood furniture for any wear and tear. It’s best to do this when you clean your furniture as you’ll already be allocating time to the item. Water damage, for example, could result in rot, but it’s more likely that you’ll find a chip or stain inflicted by day-to-day life.

In most circumstances, you should be able to repair basic damage with wood filler. However, in the case of rot, repair will take a bit more work. That’s why you should regularly check your bed frame for damage and keep on top of any minor repairs.

Keep Out of Direct Sunlight

This one might be easier said than done, particularly with a bed frame, depending on the layout of your room. However, if possible, you should keep your white wooden furniture out of direct sunlight.

Sunlight can cause serious damage to wood as it destroys lignin, which is the part of the wood that strengthens its cell walls. This means that over time, lignin damage can cause the wood to break down.

This isn’t the only issue; leaving white furniture in the sun for too long can cause it to fade to yellow, and this happens much faster than lignin damage. While color damage is only cosmetic, it still isn’t ideal for your bright white furniture.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

When wood is exposed to heat, it expands. As a result, this can result in warping, swelling, and even shrinkage.

While temperatures do affect the wood, it actually all comes back to the material’s moisture. When temperatures rise and fall, the actual shrinkage of the wood is caused by the heat changing the moisture levels within.

Keeping your white wooden furniture in a room where the temperature will stay consistent, therefore, is a key part of maintaining it properly.

Protection

When it comes to a white wood bed frame, there are several ways that you can protect it from damage and wear, whether this be a preventative item or a change in behavior.

Protective Covers

Mattress protectors are widely available to protect your mattress and bedding, but you can also invest in a bed protector to go over the base of your bed frame and protect the wood itself.

These are easy to attach, breathable, and washable, making them ideal for preventing your white wood bed frame from getting stained or scratched – especially useful if the bed in question is for a child.

Even just covering your bed with a blanket as a makeshift protector can stop spills getting onto the bed frame itself.

Avoid Jumping on It

Any bed frame will last longer if you refrain from putting it through extra stress. They’re not supposed to be jumped on, so however tempting it might be, try not to!

Fortunately, the slats on a bed from Get Laid Beds are twice as wide and twice as thick as the industry standard. They’re also solid, not sprung, making them significantly stronger, too.

Thanks to this, each bed frame from Get Laid Beds can hold up to 474kg of weight – but that doesn’t mean you should use it as a table for your heavy items. Putting items that are too heavy on your bed will weaken the support, so put them on the floor, instead.

Storage

As discussed above, there are several things that can affect the longevity of your white wooden bed frame. If you need to disassemble it at any point, be sure to store it in a cool, dry place while not in use.

Our bed frames will come to you flat packed, making them easy to assemble. Fortunately, this makes them easy to disassemble, too! Your wood bed frame will come with complete instructions on how to assemble your bed frame. Simply follow these instructions in reverse order to disassemble it, and pop it back in its original packaging to protect it while in storage.

Storing your wooden furniture properly will prevent it from getting damaged. This means it will be just as you left it next time it needs to be used, rather than collecting dust or getting battered by other items in your storage.
